Our Team:
Our team work across mental health services in Nottinghamshire. We have a variety of roles that support the safe and effective use of medicines for patients with a severe mental illness (for example schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, dementia and severe depression). We work directly with patients both in hospital environments and in the community . Our roles are extremely varied and can be patient facing or a bit more behind the scenes.
-
About where we work:
We work for an organisation called Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. The mental health division of this organisation provides pharmacy services from three core pharmacy departments at Highbury Hospital in Bulwell, Millbrook Hospital in Mansfield and the Wells Road Centre in Mapperley. As the specialist mental health pharmacy team for all of Nottinghamshire, we work closely with primary care to ensure that pathways for medicines use are safe, robust and effective. This ensures that patients can safely access their specialist mental health medicines from their GP practice. We also support primary care with complex queries about prescribing medicines for patients with a mental illness.
-
How we work together as a team:
We work together to provide both technical and clinical support on the use of medicines in our services. Pharmacy departments are usually our base at work and the dispensary is the ‘hub’. This is where the more traditional aspects of our role take place including maintaining medicines supply to inpatients and outpatients. Team members also undertake technical and patient facing clinical roles out on mental health wards and in the community – we work together to ensure our services have pharmacy input where needed. Some individuals work in specific areas of the mental health service such as Adult Mental Health (Adults age 18-65 years), Older Person’s Mental Health (Aged 65+ years), Child and Adolescent Mental Health (<18s), Perinatal Mental Health and Learning Disability Services.

How we would spend the prize money:
YouTube videos to highlight the different pharmacy careers available in NHS mental health, forensic and offender health services
