I’m a Medic, Get me out of here, will run for three weeks from Monday 21st January – Friday 8th February with two themed zones; Primary Care Zone and Mental Health Zone.
Through reading profiles, questioning, and taking part in live chats, your students will start to see people working in the NHS as people a bit like them, to see science and healthcare as relevant to their lives and future careers, and to feel as though their opinion is valued.
The activity is suitable for Years 8 and above and is fully funded for state-maintained secondary schools and colleges in England.
Teachers sign up here, take a look at the teacher information, or read on for more about the zones.
Primary Care Zone
Primary health care is the first point of contact for health care for most people, often at a community setting such as a GP surgery. It’s not just doctors who work at GP surgeries; there is a whole team of healthcare workers helping patients, from practice nurses to receptionists, each with an important role to play in the running of the practice. Primary care providers also work in medical clinics, dental surgeries or allied health practices such as physiotherapy clinics.
Mental Health Zone
People are usually referred by their GP to the mental health service they require. Services are usually made up of multidisciplinary teams — for example the Child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) includes psychiatrists, social workers, nurses, occupational therapists and more. Healthcare workers in this area need to build effective relationships with people who use mental health services, and also with their relatives and carers.
